Design work

This is my page dedicated to discussing my various design roles I have undertaken. It will briefly discuss projects and work I've done within those roles and talk about my proficiency in them. If you wish to see me go into detail about my design roles on my projects, please take a look at my projects page.

Level designer

Level designer is one of the more common designer roles I have undertaken within my projects. I enjoy working within this role whenever I take part in game jams as I get to design a quick, unique, and fun level following a quick concept for players to enjoy. This is the role within design I am most proficient in and enjoy the most. I usually start the role by creating a 2D floor plan of each part of the level, then give that to the rest of the team to see if they like the concept and if it matches the narrative of the game. Then when everyone is happy, I move onto greyboxing the level within the game engine, using applications such as Maya and Blender to create quick but complex models to allow the rest of the team to have the best idea of the levels layout.

Systems designer

Projects where I have been a systems designer have had me mainly focusing on the balancing of the mechanics within multiplayer scenarios and level progression. This is a role I am not too experienced in but am constantly improving on in my small projects and game jams.

Narrative designer

My roles as Narrative Designer have been frequently done alongside Level Designer as it allowed me to get the games story, how much of it the player experiences without looking too much into level decor, and then how much a player can see if they truly check out each detail. I always try to make the main narrative points as obvious as possible with more to it should that be what the player wants without forcing them to look at every little detail.

UI designer

As a UI Designer, I worked to add easy to understand layouts and interactivity for the players to enjoy. I aim to keep the UIs in my games as minimal as possible to allow the player to enjoy the gameplay with having only the needed information. As well as keeping my UIs as clean as possible, I also like to add some micro-interactions to my UI menus to make them feel more alive and immersive the player more. I work this role very closely with programmers to ensure everything flows seamlessly.
